Head of the Forth (Stirling)

So here we go again. After a long summer lay off, the official start of the season was upon us as two crews spent the last few weeks preparing for the Head of the Forth, held over a 6km course in Stirling and organised by St Andrews BC and Edinburgh University BC. One of the longer head races on the calendar, it was to prove a tough opener to the year, both on and off the river! Following a few weekends getting back into the swing of things and trying out new crew combinations, a boost to club morale came in the form of some newly refurbished boats, back from summer repairs. Following a naming ceremony, in typical student fashion with champagne even at 9am, both crews took to the river for a quick test outing before de-rigging the boats and packing up for the trip through to Stirling. However, again in typical fashion, mechanical difficulty with the hire car meant time was tight, and it was only thanks to the efforts of Jason Kirkpatrick and members of the host club that our boats were ready to race on time. With seconds to spare having raced up the start, there was barely time to get the boats turned around for the trip back downriver. Both boats set off strongly, maintaining a good pace from start to finish, and gained a decent set of results to show for it, with 2nd and 3rd place in the our division, and times of 21.43 and 22.42 respectively. Both crews are to be commended on a sterling effort given the stressful circumstances, and SUBC would once again like to thank the host club for accommodating our late arrival and allowing us to participate.

Aberdeen Fours and Small Boats Heads Last weekend, Saturday and Sunday 31st October/1st November, saw a record entry of crews from clubs throughout Scotland for the Aberdeen Fours and Small Boats staged on the tidal waters of the River Dee in Aberdeen. Saturday’s Fours events resulted in some extremely creditable performances with the fastest crew in Division 1 being the Aberdeen Boat club’s open coxed four stroked by Andrew Crosland which covered the 2500 metre upstream course in a time of 12 minutes 31 seconds. Fastest crew in Division 2 was the Clydesdale ARC quadruple sculls crew stroked by Chris Rae which took 11 minutes 25 seconds to cross the finishing line. Other winning crews on Saturday came mainly from Aberdeen clubs with the exception of womens open coxed fours won by Clydesdale ARC, womens novice coxed fours won by Heriot Watt University BC and womens junior 15 coxed fours won by George Heriots School. Crews from Aberdeen clubs were to the fore again in the Small Boats Head on Sunday with the exception of mens novice coxed quadruple sculls won by Strathclyde University BC, mens novice double sculls won by Strathclyde University BC, mens R2 single sculls won by Chris Rae of Clydesdale ARC and mens veteran C/D single sculls won by Alastair Duff of Inverness RC. On the weekend of 25th/26th April 2009, SUBC entered the Scottish Universities Championship and Strathclyde Park Regatta with a total of 23 crews, and managed to finish 3rd place overall. Having been on two weeks Easter holiday prior to the event, water time was extremely tight and limited, and all competitors should be proud of what they accomplished. With typical Strathclyde Park conditions of wind and rain, it proved a challenging row for all. The club walked away with 6 gold medals and several near misses. Well done to everyone who competed, and thank you to those who came to support. Winning crews: Men’s Novice Single Scull: Colin Sinclair (time: 4.10.10) Scot Univ Champ Men Double Scull: Sam Scrimgeour, Daniel Prescott (time: 8.15.84) Scot Univ Champ Men 1st Single Scull: Sam Scrimgeour (time: 8.15.78) Scot Univ Champ Men 2nd Eight: Mike McMillan, Jason Kirkpatrick, Owen Robb, Chris Kungu, Graeme Duncan, Francois Noreau, Colin Sinclair, Paul West –cox Suzanne Marshall (time: 6.52.34) Scot Univ Champ Men 2nd Single Scull: Colin Sinclair (time: 8.55.06) Scot Univ Champ Men Quadruple Scull: Doug Elliott, Paul West, Daniel Prescott, William Holmes (time: 7.33.59) Extremely Close Calls: Scot Univ Champ Men 4th Coxed Four: Sam Hagger, James Findlay, Craig Douglas, Jordan Brownlee- cox Suzanne Marshall (time: 3.58.23- 0.51 of a second behind next crew) Men’s Novice Coxed Four: Sam Hagger, James Findlay, Craig Douglas, Jordan Brownlee- cox Judy Frary (time: 4.05.94- 1.22 seconds behind next crew) Scot Univ Champ Women 3rd Coxed Four: Judy Frary, Mhairi Gillanders, Amy Nolan, Karen Finlay- cox Sarah Mackenzie (time: 10.06.67- 0.64 of a second behind next crew) There were several other close calls, all within 5 seconds of the next crew, but these three were the tightest. Clydesdale Regatta will hopefully see these crews at least 5 seconds AHEAD of the other crews! Well done to everyone!

The above 4km event took place on the Clyde, with typical Glasgow weather (bit of rain, bit of sun, bit of wind!) SUBC entered 4 crews, and despite not winning anything, came a close second in two events. The first division kicked off at 12pm. Unfortunately, due to an injury the senior men’s squad entered in Men’s Open 8s had to be scratched and did not race. The Men’s Novice 8 (Craig Douglas, Aamir Riaz, Colin Sinclair, James Findly, Andy Wood, Richard Finlayson, Hugo Barclay, Jordan Brownlee, cox Elliot Wood) had their first race together and experienced a series of put backs. The Intoxic8’s steering has been dodgy for a number of weeks and had a quick fix before the race. This resulted in the crew crashing into a bank and colliding with Dundee University on two occasions. Despite this, the crew powered through, working hard to make it to the finish line. The crew finished with a respectable time of 16:23, only 9 seconds behind the next crew in their category. The first division also saw two of our rowers, Doug Elliott and Sam Scrimgeour, jump into the Glasgow Rowing Club’s Men’s Open 8. The crew consisted of several international athletes, and it came as no surprise that this perfect looking boat came first in their category and recorded the fasted time of the day of 12:26. The second division started at 2.30pm. The Men’s R2 8 (Graeme Duncan, Jason Kirkpatrick, Hugo Barclay, Mike McMillan, Owen Robb, Chris Kungu, Colin Sinclair, Daniel Prescott, cox Suzanne Marshall) performed well. The crew has been struck down with several waves of illnesses, with the latest resulting in a novice rower having to step in for Paul West. The illness plaguing this crew has meant their training had been reduced; however the crew did not let this affect them on race day. They stormed through the race, putting the power on for each stroke. Putting in a final push for the last kilometre, the crew fought hard against strong opposition and finished second place with a time of 14:06, 20 seconds behind the winning crew. The Women’s R2 4 (Judy Frary, Mhairi Gillanders, Amy Nolan, Karen Finlay, cox Sarah Mackenzie) zoomed down the river at an average rating of 28-30. Their commitment to the winter training was evident as the crew managed to maintain a high rating whilst putting the pressure firm on the footplate. The crew experienced a slight collision with a Dundee University novice men’s 4, which lost them some valuable seconds. The crew finished a close second, 4 seconds behind the winning crew with a time of 17:19.
